Summer School in Dichato and Cobquecura
In collaboration with Universidad de Concepción (UdeC) and with the support of Fundación Mar de Chile and dozens of independent volunteers, the DRCLAS Regional Office organized a one-week summer school program for children aged 5 to 14 in the communities of Dichato and Cobquecura.
Drinkable Water Initiative in Rural Perales
The Recupera Chile project reached a milestone last month with the implementation of a rural drinkable water system, giving access to potable water to 75 families living in the highlands of Perales, a community affected by the 2010 earthquake and tsunami.
Teacher Development Initiatives in Chile
In collaboration with Recupera Chile, Fundación Educacional Oportunidad imparted teacher training workshops to a group of graduating students from the School of Education at Universidad de Concepción (UdeC). The workshops provided resources to the soon-to-be teachers to build their students' vocabulary, listening comprehension, and critical thinking skills, and develop fruitful relationships with their students' families.
Forum: Políticas Públicas Chile
Organized by Chilean graduate students and fellows from Harvard, MIT, and University of Chicago, and co-sponsored by the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies, the second annual symposium Políticas Públicas Chile took place at Harvard this spring.
Youth Entrepreneurship Competition in Cobquecura, Chile
The Recupera Chile team organized its annual entrepreneurship competition this past May. This iteration took place at a public high school in Cobquecura, one of the communities affected by the 2010 earthquake and tsunami in Chile.
Conferences in Chile: Antarctica & Climate Change; Didactic Museography
In October, DRCLAS, Museo Marítimo Nacional, Corporación Patrimonio Marítimo de Chile, and Fundación Mar de Chile, organized the conference La Antártica y el cambio climático, led by James McCarthy, Professor of Biological Oceanography. Taking place in Valparaíso, Chile, the conference was based on Professor McCarthy's research on climate change.
Recupera Chile Updates
In October, Doug Ahlers, Recupera Chile leader, DRCLAS Associate, and Senior Fellow of the Program on Crisis Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School, visited Chile to serve as keynote speaker at the conference Ciudades en transformación: Cambio climático global, desastres naturales y resiliencia urbana at Universidad del Bío-Bío. In his keynote address, he talked about his experience leading disaster recovery initiatives in New Orleans, New Zealand, Nepal, and Chile.
