Recupera Chile - Winter updates
In early January, Recupera Chile held the 2017 Dichato Summer School, which featured diverse educational and recreational activities, including a visit to the Marine/Algae Biology Laboratory, art workshops, and physical education classes. It also featured a dental operative, which included workshops on oral healthcare and a nutritional evaluation for 74 children and up to 200 members of the community.
New Recupera Chile Academic Paper
In May, Recupera Chile leaders Elizabeth Peacock-Chambers, Pilar del Canto, Douglas Ahlers, DRCLAS Associate and Senior Fellow of the Program on Crisis Leadership, Harvard Kennedy School of Government, and Judith Palfrey, Chair of the RO Advisory Group, and Professor of Pediatrics, Harvard Medical School, published the research paper "School-Based Disaster Recovery: Promotion of Children’s Mental Health Over the Long Haul."
Recupera Chile Updates - Natural Disaster Recovery Seminar and Austral Summer School in Dichato
On October 11, 2017, the Regional Office organized a public discussion in Adams House, Cambridge, on natural disaster recovery with Recupera Chile leaders Judy Palfrey and Doug Ahlers and the Chilean National Research Center for Integrated Disaster Risk Management (CIGIDEN).
For a sixth year, Recupera Chile offered the Dichato summer course to 70 children of ages 5-12 years old, whose parents are working outside their homes during the austral summer. The program started in early January 2018 and was hosted for the first time at the recently inaugurated nautical center on the Beach of Dichato.
